We invite proposals for Workshops to be held at the ACM Multimedia 2017 Conference. Accepted workshops will take place during the main conference, which is scheduled for 23-27 October, 2017 at Mountain View, California, USA.
We solicit proposals for two different kinds of workshops: regular workshops and data challenge workshops. The SIG Multimedia community expects that the proposed workshops nurture and grow new and emerging research areas.
Workshop proposals should not exceed five single spaced pages and should be submitted at http://bit.ly/2iR8Qyw.

Thematic Workshops
As a new addition, this year the ACM Multimedia conference is introducing Thematic Workshops. Inspired by the NIPS model, Thematic Workshops allow papers that could not be accommodated in the main conference to be presented to the research community. This year there will be four Thematic Workshops (organizers are shown in brackets):

The South African research community has strong individual interests in pattern recognition and machine learning, but to date has had limited interactions with the worldwide multimedia research community. This workshop aims to introduce a selection of South African researchers to the multimedia community, and give exposure to a range of multimedia-related work from South Africa.
1st International Workshop on Multimedia Verification (MuVer 2017)
The goal of this workshop is to bring together multimedia and video processing researchers, social media researchers, digital multimedia forensics experts, new media professionals, as well as multimedia and social sharing platform representatives, in an interdisciplinary forum for presenting and discussing the latest advances and open challenges in multimedia verification.
Multimedia experiences allow us to access other worlds, to live other people’s stories, to communicate with or experience alternate realities. Different spaces, times or situations can be entered thanks to multimedia contents and systems, which coexist with our current reality, and are sometimes so vivid and engaging that we feel we are living in them. Advances in multimedia are making it possible to create immersive experiences that may involve the user in a different or augmented world, as an alternate reality.
The Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge and Workshop (AVEC 2017)
The goal of the Challenge is to provide a common benchmark test set for multimodal information processing and to bring together the audio, video and audio-visual affect recognition communities, to compare the relative merits of the three approaches to depression and emotion recognition under well-defined and strictly comparable conditions and establish to what extent fusion of the approaches is possible and beneficial. A second motivation is the need to advance depression and emotion recognition systems to be able to deal with fully naturalistic behaviours in large volumes of un-segmented, non-prototypical and non-preselected data, as this is exactly the type of data that both multimedia and human-machine/human-robot communication interfaces have to face in the real world.
Large-Scale Video Classification Challenge (LSVC 2017)
Recognizing visual contents in unconstrained videos has become a very important problem for many applications, such as Web video search and recommendation, smart advertising, robotics, etc. This workshop aims at exploring new challenges and approaches for large-scale video classification with large number of classes from open source videos in a realistic setting, based upon an extension of Fudan-Columbia Video Dataset (FCVID).
Recognizing Families In the Wild (FIW) Data Challenge Workshop (RFIW 2017)
This is the first large-scale kinship recognition data competition, in conjunction with ACM MM 2017, made possible with the release of the largest and most comprehensive image database for automatic kinship recognition, Families in the Wild (FIW).
1st International Workshop on Educational and Knowledge Technologies (MultiEdTech 2017)
This workshop welcomes high-quality papers describing original research in all areas related to multimedia-based educational and knowledge technologies and particularly on the use of multimedia search and retrieval, analysis and understanding, browsing, summarization, recommendation, and visualization technologies on multimedia content available in specialized learning platforms, the Web, mobile devices and/or social networks for supporting personalized and adaptive e-learning and training.
Workshop on Multimodal Understanding of Social, Affective and Subjective Attributes (MUSA2017)
In a nutshell, the focus of the workshop is on computational and experimental methods to learn, infer, or retrieve SA from multimodal data and their applications (e.g. SA-based advertising, retrieval and search), as well as to understand how and why humans perceive SA.
The LTA2017 workshop at ACM MM 2017 builds on the momentum from LTA2016 and will bring together interdisciplinary researchers and practitioners to discuss approaches to lifelog data analytics and the applications of same, and to debate the opportunities and challenges for researchers in this new and challenging area. The disciplines involved include multimedia analytics, wearable and ubiquitous computing, HCI, information retrieval, cognitive science and healthcare and wellness.
The 2nd international workshop on Multimedia for personal health and health care
Multimedia has become an integral part of the tools and systems that are providing solutions to today’s societal challenges—including challenges related to health, aging, education, societal participation, sustainable energy, and intelligent transportation. Multimedia has thus evolved into a core enabler for future interactive and cooperative applications at the heart of society. In this second workshop we continue explore the relevance and contribution of multimedia to health care and personal media.
In this half day workshop, that is closely connected to the Multimedia Storytelling theme of the main conference, we will first present a short overview of our previous studies into content creation and storytelling for 360°, and explain the challenges and possibilities that we came across. Next, we will discuss the attendants’ own earlier experiences with 360°, video content, and invite them to reflect on the narrative aspects that they have encountered there. We will talk about the new type of engagement between the viewer, the movie, the story and the characters within that story. In the third part of the workshop, attendants will be asked to think of possible settings in which a 360° narrative could be placed, taking into account the production boundaries that were discussed earlier. We will discuss the settings, think of story concepts that might be written for these particular settings, practice with and analyze other concepts. In the last exercise, we will ask the workshop participants to come up with alternative scenes that would have fit in one of our previous interactive VR projects. By discussing these solutions afterwards, we will point out and discuss a range of possibilities and challenges that are typical for interactive cinematic VR.
Visual Analysis for Smart and Connected Communities
Advances in smart technologies are transforming cities and communities around the world through connecting their inhabitants and the surrounding built and natural environments, leading to new opportunities for innovations, improved services, and enhanced quality of life. In this new ear of transformational change, most developed communities are already equipped with visual sensors overseeing critical infrastructures (e.g. buildings, roadways, parking-lots etc.), which provides an intrusive way to extracting community-wide data (e.g., traffic conditions, emergency events) and thus supporting decision making in all aspects of smart communities. However, the popularity of visual data imposes new challenges due to their volume, arrival scale, variances, and complexity. The mission of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners from diverse areas of artificial intelligence – vision, multimedia, learning, reasoning, planning etc., to explore both established and novel applications of visual analytic techniques. The developed techniques would potentially address problems related to the all aspects of smart communities – safety, security, transportation, information technologies, internet of things etc. In particular, the three goals of this event are to (a) identify the key challenges in visual analysis for smart and connected communities; (b) recognize the promising solutions to these challenges; and (c) remark the future of research in this inter-discipline domain.

Retrieval is a classic and important topic in ACM Multimedia. This workshop focuses on large-scale instance retrieval, which is essentially a relatively new retrieval problem gathering more and more attention.Instance retrieval can be the core technology for many applications important for both the academia and industrial communities, e.g., person re-identification, product search, vehicle identification, etc. Therefore, this workshop is closely related with the ACM Multimedia and has sufficient significance.
